Cinema Volta: Daily Ambience Cinema Volta http://www.cinemavolta.com/daily/ Fresh ambient music composed daily. en-us Copyright 2006 Tue, 14 Feb 2006 00:10:00 +0100 Cinema Volta Fresh Ambient Music, Composed Daily As an exploration of ambient music and the limits of my own creativity, I will be composing and releasing a new song each day. Sometimes these songs will be sketches, sometimes full-blown compositions, it all depends on my inspiration and my available time. I hope to keep this up for a year, let's see how it works out. I hope you enjoy them. This track is a summation of the entire year's output, rendered by iTunes Signature Maker. It examines a group of files, extracts what's similar and combines them into a single audio file.

If you want to stream all 366 tracks, here's an MP3 Playlist.

This has been quite a project - at this point I can't believe it's finished. I'm not sure what comes next. I'll take a bit of time off, then plan the next project. I've really learned a great deal from creating in this fashion, and it's not something I want to give up. I will probably continue to create on a regular basic like this because it's a good way to stay on form.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Because I've been doing a lot of traveling in the last two months, I've had to work ahead in order to be able to publish daily. The 365th track was recorded on the 28th of January, so I met my goal of completing the project within a one year period, despite the 16 day hiatus.

Thanks to everyone who has offered encouragement and support, particularly my wife, Lauren Amazeen.

Vi ses,

-John

The End Here it is, the 365th and final track of this project. This is a piano study placed in Gasverket. The timing and duration of the notes comes from the decay of the reverb. Each note was held until the sound had completely decayed, then the next note would be played, selected somewhat at random. At the same time, the piano was also being sent to Augustus Loop, which was set to a 25 second loop time.

Recursive Back to exploring feedback. I've got two feedback machines running that are feeding into two multitap delays that have their own feedback circuits. The audio output of all this is then fed into an couple of envelope followers that control the parameters of the feedback machines. First steps I now have a shiny, brand-new copy of Augustus Loop, thanks to the kind folks over at Expert Sleepers. It's a really great software looper, with lots of tweakable parameters and realtime performance control.

The thing is, it's an Audio Unit plugin and doesn't work with Cubase, which I use. However, thanks to Soundflower and RAX, I have been able to integrate it with Cubase. It took me all day to figure out how to get it working, and this little piece is the result of that work. I'm too tired to do any more.

Didjeridoo trio The effects setup from yesterday is quite fun to play with and I like it's simplicity. I've applied it to didjeridoo today without the looper (that's what circular breathing is for).

I'm using my oldest didj today - I bought it almost exactly seven years ago on Charing Cross Road. It's mouthpiece is in need of more beeswax and until it's warmed up it's almost unplayable. Still, I like what I can do with it and it's got sentimental value as well. 2005-12-27

Moving in two directions The tracks of the last few days have been very static. I've been aiming for that feeling for a while. I've been looking for a way to have lots of activity within a piece and have it feel like a slow drone at the same time. I think I'm getting there.

Now it's time to take the next step. I thought it would be interesting to put a static track on top of a fairly active funk backing. This is the first result. 2005-12-18

Joystick funk I had a lot of fun with yesterday's track, and it's inspired me to pull out the funk again. Today's is just a sketch for something I'm going to do a lot of work with. I'm using Cubase instead of Live, because it fits the way I work much better. Live handles tempo-locked loops really well, but is not so good with live recording. That's fine, because I'm not really interested in creating music out of other people's music.

With the exception of the drum track, I played everything myself. As I move along with these funk tracks, I'll build the drum tracks myself as well. 2005-12-04

Different noises. I don't know about you, but I'm having lots of fun with these noises. I'm using a Junxion from STEIM (the old version) to control both a synth and a filter. Cubase lets me transform the MIDI input on different channels, so I can control more than one thing with the same gesture. There's a bit of a bug with Cubase and the way it handles virtual MIDI inputs on my Mac, so I have to send the stream from the joystick out through my physical MIDI interface and back in again. Other than that, it works like a charm.

I'm having a lot of fun getting away from using a standard keyboard to control MIDI. 2005-11-19

Wind Just a simple track full of seemingly random atmospherics. Actually, it's not particularly random, I just worked hard to make it feel that way. All of the sounds were chosen for their harmonic richness, but they are hard to identify as specific notes.

This is also a totally "pure" mix - no compressors, limiters, reverb, etc. Just the synth patches themselves and a little dither on the mixdown.

The following day After listening to yesterday's track a couple of times, I thought it might go well with other instruments. I took all the delays and synced them to a tempo and added a fairly traditional rhythm section to it, playing a slow groove. 2005-10-24

Sunday morning Still exploring what can be done with a guitar and multiple delays. This one has four harmonized multitap delays going into four cycling loops with different lengths. Once again, most of the effects used are free: Harm-Z, Delayifier and Looplex. 2005-10-23

Layers I used the same setup as yesterday, but this time, I played with my EBow and, finally, a new scale.

I also dug out another old piece of gear - my SansAmp. I have the very first model, from when they were being built in the back room of Rogue Music on 30th St. in NYC. I used it to thicken the guitar sound a bit. 2005-10-22

Build up This one is made of lots of looping and multitap delays put into a beautiful acoustic space. Still guitar-based, and still the same scale I've playing around with for days.

Almost all of the effects I'm using are freeware - some of them are quite amazing. The C3 multiband compressor from Slim Slow Slider and ApluSoft is a must-have. I'm using it for both limiting and maximizing on this track. I'm also using the mda Looplex and ExSIMultitap - both freeware as well.

One important lesson I've learned from this track - no matter how tight your budget, using a 15 year old guitar cable is probably never a good idea. 2005-10-21

Revision Upon review, I found that the tracks from the 16th through the 20th had some problems related to encoding them as MP3s, so I've remixed them so they work better in that format.

By the way, if you use iTunes, I strongly recommend that you go into "Preferences" and under the "Playback" settings, turn the effect called "Soundcheck" off. It will balance out the volume levels, but it does not work well for dense classical music and lots of ambient tracks like these.

A bit later I'm using yesterday's setup with the MIDI guitar, but I've changed the synth patch to something a bit more simple. I also had to tweak the harmonizers a bit to get them better in tune with what I'm playing. This setup is fun to play with - I feel like I've got a new toy. 2005-10-20

October morning I've taken the processes of the last few days in a new direction. I'm using my 20 year old MIDI guitar controller, a Casio DG-20, instead of a real guitar. This allows me to play with new sounds. It also allows more control over the harmonizers. The now track the notes that the guitar is playing, so I can build up much denser clouds of notes. This is all thanks to Pluggo and the Harm-Z plugin from the PeRColate package. 2005-10-19

October afternoon This has the same instrumentation as yesterday with a few tweaks. The compositional approach is similar to yesterday's as well, but I'm trying to be more melodic, sparser, but a little more structured. I'm still not quite where I want to be with this type of music, but I'm getting closer. I've been playing around with pieces like this for about 15 years, and I'm still finding them a challenge. 2005-10-15

By the way, this marks the 2/3 point of this project. There have been 244 songs so far, adding up to 21 hours of music. I've only got 122 more to go.

Infinite recursion I used two feedback machines triggered by the the same piano note. Then I convolved both the left and right outputs of the two feedback machines and fed that back into the feedback machines. I then ran that into a resonating multitap delay and then through another multitap delay with analog tape modeling. I stuck the whole thing in a stairwell. 2005-10-12

Self realized Another self-generating feedback piece. This is all generated by a single note on the piano. There are filtering delays, multitap stereo delays, MIDI delays and arpeggiators, pitch shifters and feedback networks at work here. And it all goes into the acoustic space of Laukyrkan with its standing waves. 2005-10-09

Asymmetry 5 This is the same approach as yesterday, I just switched the source and filter tracks. The result is quite different. 2005-10-08

Also, by doing five of these, I've broken the symmetry with the "Symmetry" series, so this is truly asymmetrical.

Asymmetry 4 I'm finding many different ways to combine these two tracks. This time I'm convolving the two tracks - basically the spectral information from one track controls the frequency information of the other, or as Wikipedia puts it, "In mathematics and in particular, functional analysis, convolution is a mathematical operator which takes two functions f and g and produces a third function that in a sense represents the amount of overlap between f and a reversed and translated version of g. A convolution is a kind of very general moving average, as one can see by taking one of the functions to be an indicator function of an interval."

This is the same technique that is used to apply the sampled acoustics of a space to a sound source, which, as you know, I do quite a bit. 2005-10-07

An audio-specific explanation of convolution can be found at Barry Truax's webpage.

Asymmetry Getting away from the highly structured approach of the last few days and back to my usual disorder.

This is a looping piece, sort of. There are loops, buy they're slightly different each time they show up. There's also lots of simulated tape saturation in this to give it a bit of a 1970's sound. The Wurlitzer on this is a sample, unfortunately. Mine is currently buried in a storage space in Södermalm.

To me, this has a definite autumnal feeling. 2005-10-04

Symmetry This is a phasing piece, but more structured than usual for me. There are two melodies, one played by three cellos, the other by three violas. Each group of instruments plays the same melody several times at three different tempos, 120, 100, and 80 beats per minute. They stop playing at the point when they end the repetitions in sync with the other instruments in their group.

All that aside, I think it sound pretty, and there are some nice combinations of pitches here. 2005-09-30
