Epilogue

And one to grow on . . . 2006-02-14

This track is a summation of the entire year's output, rendered by iTunes Signature Maker. It examines a group of files, extracts what's similar and combines them into a single audio file.

If you want to stream all 366 tracks, here's an MP3 Playlist.

If you want to get the entire thing via RSS, here's a feed that covers the entire year.

This has been quite a project - at this point I can't believe it's finished. I'm not sure what comes next. I'll take a bit of time off, then plan the next project. I've really learned a great deal from creating in this fashion, and it's not something I want to give up. I will probably continue to create on a regular basic like this because it's a good way to stay on form.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Because I've been doing a lot of traveling in the last two months, I've had to work ahead in order to be able to publish daily. The 365th track was recorded on the 28th of January, so I met my goal of completing the project within a one year period, despite the 16 day hiatus.

Thanks to everyone who has offered encouragement and support, particularly my wife, Lauren Amazeen.

Vi ses,

-John

The End

Here it is, the 365th and final track of this project. This is a piano study placed in Gasverket. The timing and duration of the notes comes from the decay of the reverb. Each note was held until the sound had completely decayed, then the next note would be played, selected somewhat at random. At the same time, the piano was also being sent to Augustus Loop, which was set to a 25 second loop time.

Big tank

Here's a quick and dirty didjeridoo track set in Gasverket, a huge, brick gas tank here in Stockholm. 2006-02-12

February 11, 2006

Filtered harmonies

This is a pretty version of yesterday's track. 2006-02-11

February 10, 2006

Harmonized chaos

This is a very simple, linear track that uses a MIDI gate and a MIDI controlled filter along with a harmonic generator and some simple patches. 2006-02-10

February 09, 2006

Random control

Here's a MIDI loop piece with lots of delays, filters and reverb. 2006-02-09

February 08, 2006

Wet

Still playing with filtered delays, but this time I got my didjeridoo involved. 2006-02-08

February 07, 2006

Birthday Song

I used the same configuration as yesterday to record a new, dense track. By the way, it's my birthday. 2006-02-07

February 06, 2006

Pushing it

I took yesterday's track and added even more delays to it. This time ones with filters. 2006-02-06

We're in the home stretch now. Only one week left. Now might be a good time to consider a donation.

February 05, 2006

Gone totally loopy

The danger with getting new looping software is that I will use it. In fact I'll use all of it at the same time. This is done with Augustus Loop and More Feedback Machine. 2006-02-05

February 04, 2006

Further further recursion

I've added even more effects to the mix. 2006-02-04

February 03, 2006

Further recursion

I've taken the setup from yesterday and added some processing on top of the signal output from the feedback machines. 2006-02-03

February 02, 2006

Recursive

Back to exploring feedback. I've got two feedback machines running that are feeding into two multitap delays that have their own feedback circuits. The audio output of all this is then fed into an couple of envelope followers that control the parameters of the feedback machines. Then the result of that is also feed into the envelope followers, reinforcing the control that the machines have over themselves. 2006-02-02

February 01, 2006

Grooveless

I really liked the EBow track from yesterday, so I removed it, did a bit of tweaking and now's it's its own piece. 2006-02-01

January 31, 2006

Delayed groove

Here's another ambient groove track with my strat and EBow going into many layers of delays and loops. 2006-01-31

January 30, 2006

Another pass

I added more feedback processors to yesterday's setup and this is the result. 2006-01-30

This now marks one year since the project began, but since it was suspended for two weeks following the death of my father, it has not yet reached 365 songs. So, I will continue for another 15 days to make a grand total of 366. That's a year plus one to grow on.

Feeback groove

Just funnin' 2006-01-29

January 28, 2006

Another step

I'm working on getting control of all the features available in Augustus Loop. This is an expanded version of yesterday's track, using the MIDI information from the voice to control the pitch of the loop, but delayed a bit. 2006-01-28

January 27, 2006

First steps

I now have a shiny, brand-new copy of Augustus Loop, thanks to the kind folks over at Expert Sleepers. It's a really great software looper, with lots of tweakable parameters and realtime performance control.

The thing is, it's an Audio Unit plugin and doesn't work with Cubase, which I use. However, thanks to Soundflower and RAX, I have been able to integrate it with Cubase. It took me all day to figure out how to get it working, and this little piece is the result of that work. I'm too tired to do any more.

Darker

I took yesterday's setup and tweaked it just a bit to come up with something a little more ordered and darker in mood. 2006-01-19

January 18, 2006

Apollo and Dionysus

Here's a very structured piano and a cello that's all over the place. This was made with phasing loops, MIDI arpeggiation and a nice little program that forces all the notes into one key. That was necessary for the arpeggiator to stay in tune with the rest of the piece. 2006-01-18

January 17, 2006

Gilding the lily

I'm using the same looping and delay setup as I have been in the last few days, but this time the input is my didjeridoo. The reverb comes from Laukyrkan in Sweden. 2006-01-17

Feedback study #11

And the last in the feedback series for the moment. 2006-01-16

January 15, 2006

Feedback study #10

And another in the series. Besides feedback, these tracks have a lot of multitap delays and three instances of Loopy Llama, one of them running backwards. 2006-01-15

January 14, 2006

Feedback study #9

And some more. 2006-01-14

We are now in the final month. There are only 30 more tracks to go.

Soundtrack

I'm pleased to announce that this project has led to another collaboration. The Austrian artist Evelin Stermitz has used the track 2005-09-16 as the soundtrack for her video art piece "Red Velvet." You can read more about her at her website.

Feedback study #7

Another feedback track. 2006-01-12

January 04, 2006

Drone meditation

Still pursuing the possibilities in the harmonized loop setup I've been using for the past few days. This time the notes from the track from two days ago are being used to control a gate and a filter inserted into a mutating harmonic drone. 2006-01-04

January 03, 2006

Guitar meditation 6

Yes, yet another one of these. I'm just having so much fun playing with this setup. 2006-01-03

January 02, 2006

Glitch meditation

I took the setup from the last few days and stuck the feedback machine into it. I resulted in this, distorted, glitchy thing. I kind of like it. This will really get your subwoofer going. 2006-01-02

January 01, 2006

Piano meditation 2

Same setup as yesterday, but this time I'm playing piano. 2006-01-01

By the way - Happy New Year!

December 31, 2005

Guitar meditation 5

I'm still exploring the harmonized guitar delays. This time I'm using a new effect plugin called Loopy Llama. It looks as if my Echoplex is now obsolete - this plugin can do everything it can, and a lot more. I'm using three of them on this track, two are creating phasing loops and the third is reversing the loop. 2005-12-31

December 30, 2005

Guitar meditation 4

This is using exactly the same setup as yesterday. This time I decided to mix EBow and picking. 2005-12-30

December 29, 2005

Guitar meditation 3

I'm really pleased with what I can do with the harmonizer/delay setup I've been using for the last few days. This time, it's with a very, simple, clean guitar line. 2005-12-29

December 28, 2005

Revoicing

After playing around with the effects settings from 2005-07-29, I decided to return to the track itself. This is a new version using additional harmonies, the reverb from the cathedral at Rouen and a slightly more complex delay structure. 2005-12-28

December 27, 2005

Didjeridoo trio

The effects setup from yesterday is quite fun to play with and I like it's simplicity. I've applied it to didjeridoo today without the looper (that's what circular breathing is for).

I'm using my oldest didj today - I bought it almost exactly seven years ago on Charing Cross Road. It's mouthpiece is in need of more beeswax and until it's warmed up it's almost unplayable. Still, I like what I can do with it and it's got sentimental value as well. 2005-12-27

December 26, 2005

Bubble and squeak

Since it's Boxing Day, we're having leftovers. This is the looping setup from last July 29th used for an EBow improvisation. I've adjusted it a bit so that the delays are harmonized before the go into the looper. 2005-12-26

December 25, 2005

Another Carol

Hope however you celebrate the return of the sun has been fun. 2005-12-25

December 23, 2005

Late night slow groove

Going a bit further down the same path. The configuration is identical to yesterday, just slower and a different style. This one took a long time to do because I was using so much processing. 2005-12-23

December 22, 2005

More blips

Almost the same configuration as yesterday, but all the parameters have been changed. I also added a bass track. 2005-12-22

December 21, 2005

Funky blips

Another attempt at combining automatic processes with a grove. In this case, I generated a very active, very noisy set of waveforms and then ran that through a gate and filter that were triggered by the drum track. 2005-12-21

December 20, 2005

And one more

Just another quick, fun little thing done with Garageband. 2005-12-20

December 19, 2005

Just for fun

Here's a little Garageband track I threw together just to have a bit of fun today. 2005-12-19

December 18, 2005

Moving in two directions

The tracks of the last few days have been very static. I've been aiming for that feeling for a while. I've been looking for a way to have lots of activity within a piece and have it feel like a slow drone at the same time. I think I'm getting there.

Now it's time to take the next step. I thought it would be interesting to put a static track on top of a fairly active funk backing. This is the first result. 2005-12-18

December 17, 2005

Remembering memory

This is a new version of the track from yesterday. I made a lot of changes to the processing to get closer to the concept of remembering. 2005-12-17

December 14, 2005

Didjeridoo agitation

I threw a bunch of effects into the mix. The basic track is the same as yesterday, but the results are much different. Just me, my didjeridoo and the cistern. 2005-12-14

Guitar meditation 2

This is a reworking of yesterday's guitar piece. I've changed a couple of the effects and added some more to get more of a wash of sound. 2005-12-12

December 11, 2005

Guitar meditation

I'm still enamored with the effects chain of the past two days, so I decided to try it with guitar. I like how it turned out. 2005-12-11

December 10, 2005

Piano meditation

I really liked the effects chain I set up yeserday, so I created a piano piece using it. 2005-12-10

By the way, this is track number 300. Only 66 more to go.

December 09, 2005

Absence

This is based on yesterday's track, but only echoes - the main signal has been removed. 2005-12-09

December 08, 2005

Quick and dirty

An EBow track with lots of delays. 2005-12-08

Calming things down a bit, here's a feedback/delay piece using the track from the 27th as the source material. 2005-12-07

December 06, 2005

Autofunk

Here's the computer getting funky. The feedback is generated by the drum and bass track running through the feedback machine and several multi-tap delays. 2005-12-06

December 05, 2005

EBow Groove

More funk today. This time I'm using my EBow into Looplex. 2005-12-05

December 04, 2005

Joystick funk

I had a lot of fun with yesterday's track, and it's inspired me to pull out the funk again. Today's is just a sketch for something I'm going to do a lot of work with. I'm using Cubase instead of Live, because it fits the way I work much better. Live handles tempo-locked loops really well, but is not so good with live recording. That's fine, because I'm not really interested in creating music out of other people's music.

With the exception of the drum track, I played everything myself. As I move along with these funk tracks, I'll build the drum tracks myself as well. 2005-12-04

December 03, 2005

Cyberlama is on the one

This is out of left field. I decided to play around with Live, which I've never used before. This is what happened. 2005-12-03

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but I used to have a funk band in New York in the late 80s - early 90s called, "Your Monkey's Not Funny."

December 02, 2005

Duet for Cyberlama

Here's another Delay Lama/joystick track because they're so much fun to do. This time it's two voices a fifth apart with harmonizing and filtering that are also controlled by the joystick. 2005-12-02

December 01, 2005

Variation for marimba

And here's the version for marimba. There are two lines here, each doubled and phasing. 2005-12-01

November 30, 2005

Variation for piano

This is a piano variation on the original track. It's different than yesterday's variation in that it is not a layering of the same melody line - instead, the piano is playing the lines from all the voices. 2005-11-30

November 29, 2005

Variation for voices

This is a variation of the piece using only the voice line. It's back in the cistern. 2005-11-29

November 28, 2005

Faster decay

I took yesterday's structure rules and applied it to a reverb with a shorter decay time. The piece is much faster and much shorter, but it still retains the space and feeling of slowness. 2005-11-28

November 27, 2005

Slow decay

This is a generative loop piece. Each instrument plays one of three notes, and then waits for the sound to decay to silence before playing the next note. The whole thing is placed in the reverb from the cistern which has a 45 second decay. 2005-11-27

November 26, 2005

Cyberlama chorus

Here's six Delay Lamas singing in Upsalla's Domkyrkan. 2005-11-26

November 25, 2005

Cyberlama

Delay Lama is a free VST instrument that is perfect for using with a joystick controller. I had a great time with this one and want to do more. 2005-11-25

November 24, 2005

Still playing

Another joystick track. I'm just enjoying playing free and not thinking about structure or key right now. 2005-11-24

November 23, 2005

Dreaming in a tunnel

Yesterday's joystick performance with different sounds. 2005-11-23

November 22, 2005

Sleeping in a tunnel

Still more of the joystick controller experiments. 2005-11-22

November 21, 2005

Just a ghost

Almost the same setup as the last two days, but this time, the only sound generator is the filter itself. 2005-11-21

November 20, 2005

Another take

More playing around with the joystick setup. I changed the synth patch on this one, other than that, everything else is the same. 2005-11-20

November 19, 2005

Different noises.

I don't know about you, but I'm having lots of fun with these noises. I'm using a Junxion from STEIM (the old version) to control both a synth and a filter. Cubase lets me transform the MIDI input on different channels, so I can control more than one thing with the same gesture. There's a bit of a bug with Cubase and the way it handles virtual MIDI inputs on my Mac, so I have to send the stream from the joystick out through my physical MIDI interface and back in again. Other than that, it works like a charm.

I'm having a lot of fun getting away from using a standard keyboard to control MIDI. 2005-11-19

My Odeo Channel (odeo/76284a9ae40e4668)

November 18, 2005

Twinkle

Another joystick piece. I'm starting to get a feel for the type of control that's possible with this. 2005-11-18

November 17, 2005

Some more noises

I'm doing a bit more experimentation with using a game joystick as a MIDI controller. I'm going to follow this line for a while to try to discover what's possible. Some of them will be more musical than others, but I'm having fun. 2005-11-17

November 16, 2005

Thinking

Some more background ambience. Play this at an extremely low volume and just go about your day. 2005-11-16

November 15, 2005

Wind

Just a simple track full of seemingly random atmospherics. Actually, it's not particularly random, I just worked hard to make it feel that way. All of the sounds were chosen for their harmonic richness, but they are hard to identify as specific notes.

This is also a totally "pure" mix - no compressors, limiters, reverb, etc. Just the synth patches themselves and a little dither on the mixdown.

2005-11-15

November 14, 2005

Dark November Morning

This is a simple little piece that combines phasing lines and some random generation of sounds along with it. It fits well with this grey November day in Stockholm. 2005-11-14

I've reached the 3/4 point today. There's only 92 more tracks to go. Now would be a good time to consider a donation.

November 13, 2005

Some more sounds

Similar setup to yesterday, just a different sound source. Sort of an old si-fi movie vibe here. 2005-11-13

November 12, 2005

Background

This is really an ambient track - just let it play in the background at a very low level. It's a harmonic drone run through a filter that I'm controlling with a joystick. 2005-11-12

November 11, 2005

Four Cellos

I took some of the feeling from yesterday's track and tried another approach. This is based a little bit on some of the ideas found in Steve Reich's works like "Piano Phase." All the voices use the same motive, but half of them slow down in tempo each measure. 2005-11-11

November 10, 2005

Another day

I was really stuck and uninspired this morning, so I kept fiddling with technical stuff to avoid doing anything real. Anyway, I finally forced myself to record something. I used no tricks, no effects, just a single synth patch and came up with this little phasing piece.

I like it very much. 2005-11-10

November 09, 2005

Second generation

Here's a variation on yesterday's track. 2005-11-09

November 08, 2005

Automatic

I'm letting the computer run things today. 2005-11-08

November 07, 2005

Pure and simple

Just me, my didj and a big space. 2005-11-07

November 06, 2005

Simplify

After finishing the last track, which was very structured, here's a guitar improvisation. Just a Strat, an EBow and a big, reverberant space. 2005-11-06

November 05, 2005

Finished . . . for now

I added a couple more guitar tracks for variety and really worked on the mix. It's done, at least for the moment. It's been an interesting experience, building this piece in public. It's also been interesting for me to go back to a method that I haven't used in a long time. I've learned a lot about working with Cubase as well. I never cease to be amazed at the options that are now available for a relatively small amount of money these days.2005-11-05

November 04, 2005

Starting to finish

Beginning to wrap things up. I changed a number of sounds, thinned out the arrangement and adjusted lots of levels. We're getting near the end here. 2005-11-04

November 03, 2005

Thicker

I added a guitar track and did a lot more tweaking. Now the middle section doesn't sound so much like The Orb anymore. I think most of the parts are there, so now it's time to really start cutting away at it and give it some form and space. 2005-11-03

November 02, 2005

Discovering old skills

I've messed around a bit more with structure, tweaked a few tracks and added a new one. I've also started playing around with mix automation which I haven't done in many years. This is also a MIDI-heavy track, and that's kind of fun. Every since direct to disk recording became easy to do, MIDI has taken a bit of a back seat for me, so it's nice to flex some old muscles. 2005-11-02

November 01, 2005

Next stage

A preliminary pass at adding a second section. The sounds and effects are still sketches. It feels as if we've left 70's New York for 90's London. 2005-11-01

October 31, 2005

A little more weight

Did some tweaking and added something on the low end. 2005-10-31

October 30, 2005

Proceeding with glacial slowness

Next step in the development. I've added another track and made a lot of modifications as far as the routing sounds to the delays go. Just trying to thin it out a bit to give the echoes more room to breathe. 2005-10-30

October 29, 2005

2nd step

No big change, I just added another instrument doing something slightly different. 2005-10-29

October 28, 2005

1st step

I've carved it up a bit and let the delays take more of a role. We'll see where this leads us. 2005-10-28

October 27, 2005

Forward into the past

All these delay pieces have inspired me to go back to a way I worked a long time ago - slowly building up layers to create a soundscape and then cutting away sections to form a structure. Over the next few days I'll be doing that with this track. 2005-10-27

October 26, 2005

Mid autumn

I've brought back the EBow. This is using the harmonized delays and the four loopers. Other than that, no tricks, just a guitar improvisation. 2005-10-26

October 25, 2005

The day after that

I was pleased with the way this setup worked with traditional backing, so I tried it with non-traditional accompaniment. I had the feedback machine play along with the track from the 23rd. 2005-10-25

October 24, 2005

The following day

After listening to yesterday's track a couple of times, I thought it might go well with other instruments. I took all the delays and synced them to a tempo and added a fairly traditional rhythm section to it, playing a slow groove. 2005-10-24

October 23, 2005

Sunday morning

Still exploring what can be done with a guitar and multiple delays. This one has four harmonized multitap delays going into four cycling loops with different lengths. Once again, most of the effects used are free: Harm-Z, Delayifier and Looplex. 2005-10-23

October 22, 2005

Layers

I used the same setup as yesterday, but this time, I played with my EBow and, finally, a new scale.

I also dug out another old piece of gear - my SansAmp. I have the very first model, from when they were being built in the back room of Rogue Music on 30th St. in NYC. I used it to thicken the guitar sound a bit. 2005-10-22

October 21, 2005

Build up

This one is made of lots of looping and multitap delays put into a beautiful acoustic space. Still guitar-based, and still the same scale I've playing around with for days.

Almost all of the effects I'm using are freeware - some of them are quite amazing. The C3 multiband compressor from Slim Slow Slider and ApluSoft is a must-have. I'm using it for both limiting and maximizing on this track. I'm also using the mda Looplex and ExSIMultitap - both freeware as well.

One important lesson I've learned from this track - no matter how tight your budget, using a 15 year old guitar cable is probably never a good idea. 2005-10-21

Revision

Upon review, I found that the tracks from the 16th through the 20th had some problems related to encoding them as MP3s, so I've remixed them so they work better in that format.

By the way, if you use iTunes, I strongly recommend that you go into "Preferences" and under the "Playback" settings, turn the effect called "Soundcheck" off. It will balance out the volume levels, but it does not work well for dense classical music and lots of ambient tracks like these.

A bit later

I'm using yesterday's setup with the MIDI guitar, but I've changed the synth patch to something a bit more simple. I also had to tweak the harmonizers a bit to get them better in tune with what I'm playing. This setup is fun to play with - I feel like I've got a new toy. 2005-10-20

October 19, 2005

October morning

I've taken the processes of the last few days in a new direction. I'm using my 20 year old MIDI guitar controller, a Casio DG-20, instead of a real guitar. This allows me to play with new sounds. It also allows more control over the harmonizers. The now track the notes that the guitar is playing, so I can build up much denser clouds of notes. This is all thanks to Pluggo and the Harm-Z plugin from the PeRColate package. 2005-10-19

October 18, 2005

Another afternoon

I've kept the same seup and added a multitap delay at the input. This time, I'm using a pick instead of an EBow. It's sort of a blues in E. 2005-10-18

October 17, 2005

Early Autumn

I really enjoyed playing with the setup from yesterday, so here's another guitar improvisation in a similar vein. 2005-10-17

October 16, 2005

Thinking

A guitar improvisation. It's pretty simple, my Strat and EBow played into a couple of harmonized delays and placed in Gasverket thanks to Rayverb. 2005-10-16

October 15, 2005

October afternoon

This has the same instrumentation as yesterday with a few tweaks. The compositional approach is similar to yesterday's as well, but I'm trying to be more melodic, sparser, but a little more structured. I'm still not quite where I want to be with this type of music, but I'm getting closer. I've been playing around with pieces like this for about 15 years, and I'm still finding them a challenge. 2005-10-15

By the way, this marks the 2/3 point of this project. There have been 244 songs so far, adding up to 21 hours of music. I've only got 122 more to go.

October 14, 2005

October night

This is just an old-fashioned, non-synched looping piece with almost no effects, just a little flanging and a little reverb. Nothing being done here that couldn't have been done in the 70's at one thousand times the price. 2005-10-14

October 13, 2005

Backpedaling

I hate to go back on a promise, but I took yesterday's configuration and ran it through a ring modulator. Not only that, but I even interfered with the process by tweaking the settings of the ring modulator throughout the course of the track. I had fun doing it too - I just don't know what's come over me. 2005-10-13

October 12, 2005

Infinite recursion

I used two feedback machines triggered by the the same piano note. Then I convolved both the left and right outputs of the two feedback machines and fed that back into the feedback machines. I then ran that into a resonating multitap delay and then through another multitap delay with analog tape modeling. I stuck the whole thing in a stairwell. 2005-10-12

October 11, 2005

Generation 3

Lather, rinse, repeat. 2005-10-11

October 10, 2005

Generation 2

Same setup as yesterday, but I've tweaked all the processors and put the whole mix into the cistern. 2005-10-10

October 09, 2005

Self realized

Another self-generating feedback piece. This is all generated by a single note on the piano. There are filtering delays, multitap stereo delays, MIDI delays and arpeggiators, pitch shifters and feedback networks at work here. And it all goes into the acoustic space of Laukyrkan with its standing waves. 2005-10-09

October 08, 2005

Asymmetry 5

This is the same approach as yesterday, I just switched the source and filter tracks. The result is quite different. 2005-10-08

Also, by doing five of these, I've broken the symmetry with the "Symmetry" series, so this is truly asymmetrical.

October 07, 2005

Asymmetry 4

I'm finding many different ways to combine these two tracks. This time I'm convolving the two tracks - basically the spectral information from one track controls the frequency information of the other, or as Wikipedia puts it, "In mathematics and in particular, functional analysis, convolution is a mathematical operator which takes two functions f and g and produces a third function that in a sense represents the amount of overlap between f and a reversed and translated version of g. A convolution is a kind of very general moving average, as one can see by taking one of the functions to be an indicator function of an interval."

This is the same technique that is used to apply the sampled acoustics of a space to a sound source, which, as you know, I do quite a bit. 2005-10-07

An audio-specific explanation of convolution can be found at Barry Truax's webpage.

October 06, 2005

Asymmetry 3

I took the output of the last two days and laid them on top of each other out of sync. I'm pleased with the way they work together. 2005-10-06

October 05, 2005

Asymmetry 2

This is based on the same processes and structures as yesterday with a bit of fiddling and different instruments. 2005-10-05

October 04, 2005

Asymmetry

Getting away from the highly structured approach of the last few days and back to my usual disorder.

This is a looping piece, sort of. There are loops, buy they're slightly different each time they show up. There's also lots of simulated tape saturation in this to give it a bit of a 1970's sound. The Wurlitzer on this is a sample, unfortunately. Mine is currently buried in a storage space in Södermalm.

To me, this has a definite autumnal feeling. 2005-10-04

October 03, 2005

Symmetry 4

Exploring further on the same track. I've thinned it out a little bit, having each instrument rest for a few bars determined by a bilaterally symmetrical pattern. 2005-10-03

October 02, 2005

Symmetry 3

I added two half-tempo basses to the track. Because they're exactly half tempo, the length is not changed, but they fill out the track quite nicely. 2005-10-02

October 01, 2005

Symmetry 2

I think this one shows promise, so I'm going to work on developing it further. I've added another cello and viola, each at 110 bpm and this time playing the melody a fifth higher. It's twice as long too, because the new tempo takes that long to get back in sync.

2005-10-01

September 30, 2005

Symmetry

This is a phasing piece, but more structured than usual for me. There are two melodies, one played by three cellos, the other by three violas. Each group of instruments plays the same melody several times at three different tempos, 120, 100, and 80 beats per minute. They stop playing at the point when they end the repetitions in sync with the other instruments in their group.

All that aside, I think it sound pretty, and there are some nice combinations of pitches here. 2005-09-30

September 29, 2005

Resonation

Tweaking yesterday's mix here. I've added more delays and resonators and moved it to a different space in the final mix. 2005-09-29

September 28, 2005

Resonance

I took the setup from the 24th and slowed it way, way down and added some modeled analog delays. The idea is to take more time to explore the resonances in the space. 2005-09-28

September 27, 2005

Even more

This is a variation on yesterday's track with new instruments and a different space. 2005-09-27

September 26, 2005

More sounds

Here's some more phasing loops, placed in Laukyrkan. 2005-09-26

September 25, 2005

Sounds in space

Just some sounds moving through Gasverket. Inspired by Morton Feldman, but sounding more like David Tudor. 2005-09-25

September 24, 2005

Reinforced

Some slow phasing loops placed in the ballroom at Drottningholm Palace in Stockholm. The notes for the melodies were chosen for how they triggered resonances in the reverb. I used Rayverb for this one because it is much more "tweakable." 2005-09-24

September 23, 2005

Some more noises

Continuing with the hand-made approach. This is a variation on yesterday's piece. 2005-09-23

September 22, 2005

Some noises

Continuing with the "hand made" approach. Once again, no generative processes here, just me playing with sounds. 2005-09-22

On this track, I'm using the amazing Crystal synth plugin from Green Oak software. Even more amazing - it's free. Their Delayifier plugin is buried in this track somewhere as well.

September 21, 2005

Volitional

No loops, no feedback, no self-modulating processes on this one. Just me improvising with the cistern. 2005-09-21

September 20, 2005

Bleepy

I changed the order of some of the processors and came up with this. 2005-09-20

September 19, 2005

Bloopy

Same basic setup as the last few, but the tempo is faster, and it hasn't been placed in any sort of acoustic space. This is just the pure feedback and delays in all their glory. 2005-09-19

September 18, 2005

Caen

And now we're in Caen. 2005-09-18

September 17, 2005

Rouen

This is turning into a French series. Today the feedback machine travels to Rouen. 2005-09-17

September 16, 2005

Chartres

I'm really happy that I can do this in real time now, and I really like the feedback machine is doing, so I'm sticking to the process for a bit longer and playing around with spaces. This one is in the cathedral at Rouen. 2005-09-16

September 15, 2005

Realtime

I decided to upgrade my computer, so now I can hear all this stuff in real time. I have now upgraded my 6 year old G4 to 1.7 Ghz and it makes all the difference in the world. I haven't been able to make the commitment to a G5 yet, and this old box has sentimental value to me.

Anyway, here's the latest feedback piece: 2005-09-15

September 14, 2005

Quiet

Same connections as yesterday, I just adjusted levels and put it all in a different space in the end. I'm flying blind with these, all the effects are overloading my computer's processor by about 200%, so this is electronic music done in the old-fashioned way - you set up some programs, make some guesses, start the process running and come back later to hear the results. In this case, I only have to wait about 5 minutes, not 24 hours. 2005-09-14

September 13, 2005

Darker

Continuing with the same set up as the last two days. This time, I've added some more conventionally musical elements. I think it makes it sound a little ominous. 2005-09-13

September 12, 2005

Once more

Taking yesterday's setup and making it slower. It's in Gasverket now, because today is a work day after all. 2005-09-12

September 11, 2005

Automatic

Feedback and delays heavily modulated and then fed into Domkyrkan, because it is Sunday after all. 2005-09-11

September 10, 2005

Morning improvisation 2

Back into the cistern with the ebow. I was going after a "half-heard" feeling here, trying hard to make it just about the reverb and not the notes. 2005-09-10

September 09, 2005

Sequence 3.6

A snake eating its tail. Everything is modulating everything else in this one and then stuck in a huge space. 2005-09-09

By the way, this is probably the only time I will ever use granular synthesis. It doesn't make me nauseous the way that ring modulation does, but it comes pretty close. I only used it this time because this application of it doesn't sound like someone trying to pull a nail out of a knothole.

September 08, 2005

Sequence 3.5

Returning to the sequence track for the moment. This one is placed in Laukyrkan on Gotland. It makes use of frequency shifting, mult-tap delays and frequency distortion. 2005-09-08

September 07, 2005

Morning improvisation

This was a tricky one for me - other than the 45 second reverb from the cistern, there are no effects, no loops, no special processes. Just me, my strat and my ebow. 2005-09-07

I've just been informed that this site has been nominated in the category of "Best Podcast" for Deutsche Welle's "BOB" awards.

The BOBs - BEST OF THE BLOGS - Deutsche Welle International Weblog Awards 2005

September 06, 2005

Sequence 3.4

Continuing the same process. This time the effects are filtered echoes and the reverb from Gasverket here in Stockholm. 2005-09-06

September 05, 2005

Sequence 3.3

Same setup as yesterday, I just changed the processing on the track. This one is about echoes and standing waves. 2005-09-05

September 04, 2005

Sequence 3.2

This is yesterday's track run through a set of moving resonators and then put into the Cistern. I just can't resist making things blurry. 2005-09-04

I'm using Altiverb instead of Rayverb for the Cistern reverb because it can handle the 44 second decay much better.

September 03, 2005

Sequence 3.1

Similar process as before, just with very different results. This also began with a single note run through a variety of MIDI processors. 2005-09-03

September 02, 2005

Sequence 2.4

Some more modifications of the effects chain and I placed it all in Domkyrkan this time. The is probably the end of this series because I've hit a brick wall with my computer. The creation of this track keeps crashing Cubase. Serves me right for using so much beta software. 2005-09-02

September 01, 2005

Sequence 2.3

This set of sequences is turning out to be more about taking the same structures and sounds and altering them through the processing. I've added an infinite delay with modulation to yesterday's track. I also boosted the level of the oboe. I'm really pushing the limits of my six-year-old G4 here.2005-09-01

By the way, this is number 200.

August 31, 2005

Sequence 2.2

Shifted things around a bit, changed the patches and routed the MIDI delays to different sounds. It's a bit dreamy. 2005-08-31

August 30, 2005

Sequence 2.1

Here's a modification of the initial conditions of the sequence, based on the sounds of yesterday's version. 2005-08-30

August 29, 2005

Sequence 9

And finally: 2005-08-29

August 22, 2005

Sequence 2

Next entry in the series. 2005-08-22

August 21, 2005

Sequence 1

I got a handle on the processing from yesterday and this is the first result. This is the start of a series that are all generated from a single note. That note is run through a stack of processors, some at war with each other. Through the series, the note and the processing will stay the same, just the sound source will change. 2005-08-21

August 20, 2005

Smear

This is just a big mess. Just a live mic picking up lots of noises in the room and outside the window, feeding back, and then run through lots and lots of processing. It may be messy, but it's kind of fun and pointing toward a whole setup that I'll be working with for a while. 2005-08-20

August 19, 2005

Environment 5

Last in the series. This is in an impossible room: huge, made of tin with almost 0% humidity. 2005-08-19

August 18, 2005

Environment 4

Not such a huge space, but some really interesting resonances. 2005-08-18

By the way, I've been looking at Digital Musician, a service that allows musicians to collaborate online. I used the Rocket Network a few years ago to collaborate with David Azarch in NYC to create the Bossa 'n' Bass track from the early days of this site.

If you're interested in an online collaboration, let me know.

August 17, 2005

Environment 3

A much larger and more dissonant space this time. 2005-08-17

August 16, 2005

Environment 2

Same track as yesterday, but in a very different acoustic space. 2005-08-16

August 15, 2005

Environment 1

The first in a series of short tracks exploring the effects of acoustic space on the same, very slow piece of music. 2005-08-15

Reading

This is from a key moment in the film. All the music was created by using the sounds from the film itself, dialogue, background noises, etc. and mutating and modifying them. 2005-08-14

By the way, this marks the halfway point of the Daily Ambience project. I have reached 182 tracks.

Now might be a good time to consider a donation - you can use Amazon or PayPal. Just follow the links in the column to the right.

Distant voice

Once again exploring the same process. 2005-07-29

July 28, 2005

Another simple loop

Still playing around with the setup, doing a few tweaks and trying it with a cello patch this time instead of using my guitar. 2005-07-28

July 27, 2005

Simple loop

Just a variation on yesterday's setup, the EBow is back. It's really difficult not to overplay, so I'm working on playing less. I still think I could be even more sparse, so I'll probably be working with this setup for a while. 2005-07-27

July 26, 2005

Echo Blues

Same technical setup as yesterday, minus the EBow. This is sort of a blues in A minor, sort of . . . 2005-07-26

July 25, 2005

Harmonized echoes

Pretty simple - ebow guitar with pitch shifted delays and a long looping delay run into the acoustics of Lau Kyrkan and its standing waves. 2005-07-25

Machine Duet

This is a duet between the feedback/delay machine and me on bass. 2005-07-24

Just the shell

This time it's all feedback and delays. 2005-07-23

July 22, 2005

Loop 9

Getting further and further away from the source, I took the result from yesterday and used it to generate feedback. 2005-07-22

July 21, 2005

Loop 8 Approximately

I took the last two tracks, flipped the phase on one of them and mixed them together at the same level. This has filtered out whatever was in common between the two and left only the differences. 2005-07-21

July 20, 2005

Loop 7

Same process as yesterday, the only difference is that the source and filter sounds for the convolving have been reversed. 2005-07-20

July 19, 2005

Loop 6

I took the last two loops and convolved them, then used the output to feed a bunch of modulators. 2005-07-19

July 18, 2005

Music for real films

This is the end track for a short film I'm scoring. It uses the dialog track a source material for a series of transformations. 2005-07-18

By the way, my technical problems have been solved, and all the links should be back to normal.

July 17, 2005

Loop 5

Took the base material from the 15th and made it much denser. 2005-07-17

July 16, 2005

Loop 4

The same, but different. 2005-07-16

July 15, 2005

Loop 3

Continuing to work with the raw materials of the loop. This time using different
sounds and very different processing. 2005-07-15

July 14, 2005

Loop again

Highly modified version of yesterday's track which was a little too sloppy
even for me. 2005-07-14

Web Phases 4

Still using the Web Phases source material. Garageband was the tool on this one. It kind of feels like early 70s New York to me. 2005-07-12

Web Phases 3

Yet another track based on the Web Phases material, highly modified. 2005-07-11

10 Voices version 2

Took the same melody and process from yesterday, used a simpler synth patch and put it in just intonation. 2005-07-07

July 06, 2005

10 Voices

This is a phasing piece. I created a very simple melody using a very, very simple synth patch and then recorded it 10 times, each time reducing the beat per minute of the track by 1. 2005-07-06

Feedback study #1

I'm starting a series of feedback studies using the feedback machine and a variety of processes before and after. They'll all be feed into a computer recreation of the Ft. Worden cistern in Washington State in the US. Thanks to Dave Gamper for helping me with that. 2005-07-01

June 30, 2005

Round and round

I put the track from the 22nd into a new version of the feedback machine. It's got lots of delays now and the feedback is using the didjeridoo control system to control itself. 2005-06-30

June 29, 2005

And once more . . .

Same process as yesterday, just a different style. 2005-06-29

June 28, 2005

Looking over my shoulder

Getting back to my funk roots here. It's a little experiment in one-finger accompaniment. I used Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent and Broomstick Bass. I never imagined I'd use any programs like those, but it's pretty fun, and the rhythm tracks they came up with are not bad. At least they don't talk back like real musicians. But on the other hand, they're not very good at telling jokes and they never buy a round. 2005-06-28

Even closer

I figured out how yesterday's setup work, so I completely changed it. Here's a new approach to the control technology. 2005-06-26

June 25, 2005

Out of my control

I fiddled around a bit more with yesterday's track. This is more what I'm after with the control system. The only problem is - I have no idea how I got this to work. 2005-06-25

June 24, 2005

Didjeridoo control system

Having another go with the control system. 2005-06-24

Oh, my head . . .

Another migraine track. 2005-06-23

June 22, 2005

Swoopy, bloopy noises

This is a test of a few things - I'm using JunXion from Steim to turn a game joystick into a MIDI controller. Its controlling a synth and some effects plugins. The other thing I'm testing is Soundflower, an audio routing program for the Mac. I'm using it to route the audio out of and back into Cubase in order to record the synth and effects on to separate audio tracks. I'm having to do all this because Cubase doesn't like the MIDI coming from JunXion and does strange things to it.

I just couldn't help myself

I just had to stick the strings into the feedback machine to see what happens. 2005-06-21

I can't help it, but whenever I do something with strings, I have to slow it way down and make it soft. 2005-06-20

Ear candy

I really love Garageband. It's so fun to use to make music, it's like a toy. It's really good for blowing out the cobwebs and having a little fun with no pressure. 2005-06-17

Back again?

We take a trip down memory lane to the Piano Lounge. Things are pretty much the same, except it's summer now and they've got the windows open. 2005-06-15

I have reached the 1/3rd point by the way - 122 tunes. I hardly believe it myself.

Flutter guitar revisited

Going back a couple months - this is that big guitar wash. I've done a bit of tweaking with the timing and totally changed the mix. I know there's something in here, I've just got to find it. 2005-06-14

The son of feedback machine

Still playing around with this. The didjeridoo has disappeared, but it is still controlling all the processing. 2005-06-12

The feedback machine meets the long wooden tube

The feedback machine returns, this time added to the didjeridoo track I've been working on. 2005-06-11

June 10, 2005

Well, err - ummmm

Again with the same track, still trying out different controlled processing. Not sure what I think of it. 2005-06-10

And some more

Same track, different processing. 2005-06-09

June 08, 2005

Methods of control

Back again to the didjeridoo. Lots and lots of signal processing getting modulated by the audio signal of the didj itself. I'm starting to get it pinned down. This setup is getting more responsive to my playing. Still a long way to go, however. 2005-06-08

Slower

A variation on yesterday. By making it slower and changing the voices, some of the intervals and the tuning, it doesn't feel as sad. 2005-05-27

May 26, 2005

Today

Instead of working from a technique or a set of sounds that interested me, I set out to create a track that reflected my mood today, using fairly traditional means - no tricky effects or patches, just some standard sounds and a little bit of reverb. This is sort of a canon and does a good job of expressing how I feel at the moment. 2005-05-26

May 25, 2005

A little tweeky

Still traveling down the same river here. I took yesterday's didjeridoo recording and added a more processing, using the sound to control even more parameters. I'm working on getting this setup to work more smoothly and responsively - I think there's some potential buried in here somewhere. 2005-05-25

May 24, 2005

. . . and deeper

Another didjeridoo track using the same system as yesterday. This time it's controlling the parameters of a different set of effects. I think the control signal to result process is a little more apparent in this one. 2005-05-24

By the way, this is the 100th track so far.

May 23, 2005

Digging deeper

I expanded on yesterday's idea. This time, the audio signal from the didjeridoo is being used to control a number of the effects parameters. So, as the playing gets more active, so do the effects. 2005-05-23

May 22, 2005

Delayed response

This is a very rough, quick sketch for something that needs to be explored further. I've created a whole set of effects that are only triggered when the didjeridoo goes above a certain volume. There's a lot more that can be done with this approach. 2005-05-22

May 21, 2005

So you can dance underwater and not get wet

Took yesterday's track, cut the tempo in half and stuck it underwater. 2005-05-21

Attempting to make chaos out of order

I did this track with Garageband, which is a truly amazing program that I wish was available when I was 16 years old. I'm still pretty happy to have it now.

Garageband does a great job of pulling everything into line, matching tempos, keys and phrases. I've worked quite hard to create something that feels quite disorganized from it. 2005-05-18

May 17, 2005

Digital generation loss

One of the fun things about doing recursive processes in the old analog tape world was discovering the interesting sound quality that would arise from the generation loss as you bounced the signal from tape to tape. This doesn't really happen in the digital world, where copies are perfect. One thing that I have been doing during this project is using the MP3 files as the source material, so as we progress through generations of encoding and decoding, there is the introduction of a few artifacts.

I think this track is beginning to show some of the effects of generation loss. I kind of like it. 2005-05-17

May 16, 2005

So, anyway . . .

Just a big wash of sound. Press play, sit back, relax and ignore it. 2005-05-16

May 15, 2005

25% !

This project is now one quarter of the way through. To celebrate that, I morphed two of my favorite tracks so far. Can you guess which two they are? 2005-05-15

May 14, 2005

Return of the long wooden tube

As promised yesterday, the dijeridoo makes a return appearance, this time sent through the feedback machine and a whole bunch of frequency and spectral processors. 2005-05-14

May 13, 2005

Slamming into a brick wall at full speed

I reintroduced the feedback machine with a few modulation and panning twists. I think I've taken this path as far as I can at the moment. Tomorrow - the return of the long wooden tube! 2005-05-13

May 12, 2005

Slightly veering to the left

Similar processes to the last few, but no feedback this time. There's delay lines and moving filters. Amazing to think that this all began with a simple sine wave. 2005-05-12

A big thanks to the person who sent a donation yesterday.

May 11, 2005

Flogging a dead horse

Continuing with the feedback machine process. This time there's a slight difference. I used yesterday's track as the source for the feedback, but this time set up the feedback machine as a send instead of as an insert, so you can still hear the original track beneath the new sounds. 2005-05-11

May 10, 2005

Second verse, same as the first

Same process as yesterday, using yesterday's track as the trigger, with another moving filter and a reverb added. 2005-05-10

For those of you who live in Sweden, Denmark, Norway or Switzerland, Apple's iTunes Music store is now available to you. This means that you can buy Cinema Volta albums online. If you live in Switzerland, it also means you can get one free song.

May 09, 2005

Round and round

Continuing in the same vein. I took yesterdays track and used it as the source material for the feedback machine I created. I tweaked the parameters a bit and came up with this. My wife thinks it sounds like a Doctor Who soundtrack. 2005-05-09

May 08, 2005

Sci-Fi music

More experiments in automated music. I set up the initial conditions with just a sine wave triggering everything. This one was done with a whole stack of Pluggo plugins feeding each other. I just have to step out of the way and let them do their thing. 2005-05-08

May 04, 2005

Control

Almost the same thing, without the randomness. 2005-05-04

May 03, 2005

Infuriating . . .

This is completely slapdash and random with very little involvement on my part, and of course, much more interesting and listenable than things that I slave over for hours. The source material is some of the MIDI tracks from Web Phase. 2005-05-03

May 02, 2005

Getting closer

This is the long, slow version with a big reverb, the original signal subtracted and a new, transposed version laid on top. Basically what you get is a reverb coming back in a different pitch. 2005-05-02

May 01, 2005

Bordering on obsession

Same original material once again, but this time at the original tempo. I'm playing around with phase relationships and offsets as well as acoustic resonance. 2005-05-01

April 30, 2005

And furthermore - -

I've taken yesterday's track and made it a bit blurrier. I've also converted to Just Intonation. 2005-04-30

It took three programs to get it this way: Garage Band, Logic Express and Cubase SX 3. I wish I could combine all the features into one program.

April 29, 2005

More

I liked yesterday's tune, so I made it twice as long, and twice as slow. 2005-04-29

April 28, 2005

Floating

Expanding on yesterday's track. 2005-04-28

By the way, with yesterday's release, we've hit the 20% mark. Yesterday's piece was #73.

Ashes

For my father, Max Edward Hobbs, November 20, 1931 - April 3, 2005. 2005-04-19

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

A little obsessive

Here's yet another version of the same material. I'm starting to get an idea from this raw material. You'll hear it as it unfolds. 2005-04-01

March 31, 2005

Old school

Still hammering away at the same source material. This time it sounds like the early days of analog synths. 2005-03-31

March 30, 2005

Simplify, simplify

Another variation. It's much simpler, but I'm using one of the MIDI tracks to control a filter with the resonance turned way up to add an additional, "ghost" voice. I used the same technique on the environmental recordings used in the soundtrack for "Retina." 2005-03-30

By the way, this is day 60 - I'm 1/6th of the way through. That doesn't seem like a lot, but in one month, I'll be 1/4th of the way through, and that does seem like quite a bit. Numbers are funny that way.

By the way, now might be a good time to consider a donation. You can use PayPal or Amazon. The link is in the right column.

March 27, 2005

Fresh start

Here's some new stuff. I'll probably play around with some variations on this one in the near future. This began its life as Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Web Phase instrument on this site. 2005-03-27

C'est fini

Here's the final mix of the soundtrack for the video. 2005-03-26

The piece will be shown in New York on April 6th as part of an evening called "Made in the Shade - Video Works by Cora Mancini and Matias Aguilar."

It's happening in Tribeca at DEKK- Restaurant Bar Lounge Screening Room

Terra familiaris

Back on familiar territory with another exploration of the variations brought about by arrangement. 2005-03-24

March 23, 2005

Work in progress

Coralia Mancini, a video artist from New York has asked me to create the score for a new piece she's showing at the beginning of April. It's based on the tune from 2005-02-01. I'll be posting what I've done each day until it's finished. Today, I took a seven minute track and turned it into an eleven minute track. I also replaced the bass track which was annoying me. 2005-03-23

By the way, this is number 53. If I'd have been smart and only promised one tune per week, I'd be done by now. Instead, I've got 303 to go.

March 22, 2005

I think we've been down this road before.

Still exploring how seemingly minor variations on the same settings can have major results. It raises the question - what makes the piece, melody or arrangment? The melodies of the last three pieces have been identical, but they have almost no similarity because the voices are different and the structure of each piece is slightly different. 2005-03-22

March 21, 2005

A much needed break

Just playing around with Garageband. It's really a fun program and the results can be quite satisfying. 2005-03-16

March 15, 2005

Getting a little obsessive

Oh no - - again??? Yesterday's was a bit of a trainwreck, so I got up this morning and re-did it. I promise to have something different tomorrow. 2005-03-15

March 14, 2005

Once more with Felix -

Still exploring the same terrain. This time I added some drums. I had to completely redo the bass then. The bass part is still sketchy, but we'll see where this goes. 2005-03-14

March 13, 2005

Phase 2

I liked the direction things were headed with yesterday's tune, so I'm working on taking it further. I re-recorded the bed, added bass and removed the lead guitar. I'll continue to reveal the progress of this track as it develops. 2005-03-13

March 12, 2005

Sketch

Fairly simple setup, almost the same as 2005-03-03: simulation of a Space Echo and the reverb from Domkyrken. The instrument is just a Strat and an ebow, with no additional processing. 2005-03-12

March 11, 2005

Cooperation

My computer and I finally came to a truce and collaborated on this one. 2005-03-11

March 10, 2005

As wispy as possible

Back on the 24th of February, I took an even earlier tune and stripped out the instrument, leaving only the reverb. On this one, I took a very small section of that and turned it into a sample, played it as notes and ran it through a huge echoey reverb. 2005-03-10

March 09, 2005

Taking control

This computer is not going to get the best of me. I've imposed my will on what it's been producing. 2005-03-09

Well, the computer took over again. Here's another one I had very little control over. 2005-03-08

Layers

This one is quite pretty I think. Just a guitar and lots of echo.

Full circle

During the winter of 1989-90 I was on the road with They Might Be Giants, working as their monitor engineer (and lots of other jobs as well.) During a stop in Athens, Georgia, I spotted a used Ashbory bass guitar in a music store. I really liked it, but didn't buy it. Then they stopped making them.

After years of fruitless searching for another, I gave up. Well, they just started making them and I got one. This was recorded with it. Spooky bass in a long hallway.

February 28, 2005

On the verge of exploding

Controlled feedback, using tools in ways that weren't intended. I used both my G4 and my Powerbook, with the reverb running on the Powerbook and fed back into itself with a delay. I had to ride the faders the whole way through to keep thing from blowing up. I couldn't have done this without Rayverb and WormHole.

Over-reliance on technology

This was recorded using JunXion from Steim. It lets me turn a gaming joystick into a musical controller. 2005-02-25

There was far too much technology involved in this one.

1. Logic Express
2. JunXion
3. WormHole
4. Rayverb
5. Amadeus II

Also, I've made it possible for you to add comments to these posts, so if you're interested, you can let me know what you think, and ask questions.

Networked networking

Not only are you listening to this over a network, it was created using one. The reverb is courtesy of Rayverb again, but this time it was running on my laptop while the sounds were running on my G4. I used a great thing called WormHole to send the audio between the two. 2005-02-18.

Enough with the bells!

As usual, doing the bell thing again. 2005-02-17.

Best of both worlds?

This is about as ambient as it gets. This is a remix of a bed I created for a corporate video I've been editing for the last week. 2005-02-14.

I hope the podcasting side is working out. I've been editing the XML file by hand until the problem with .Mac and headers is worked out.

I know I'm behind two tunes, but hey - you should see my credit card bills.

February 13, 2005

Fixed?

Archive.org is great, but the process is too slow for spontaneity. I'm trying .Mac now. It should solve the bandwidth issue, but it's a little flaky on the podcast side. We'll see how it works.

Redux

I keep returning to this over and over again. It's the piano solo from the song "Portsmouth" from the album "Stuff." Which you can buy at the iTunes Music Store.

It was recorded using an Atari ST and the Hotz Translator software. This time re-realized in Garageband.

So, here's 2005-02-10.

Once again

Anyway, here's the tune for the 9th, 2005-02-09.

Problem solved

The bandwidth problem has been solved thanks to archive.org.

The existing links have been changed from torrents to direct downloads, so you should be able to get instant gratification now.

I'm still working out all the logistics, so new songs won't start until the weekend.

Speed

Help is on the way regarding downloads. More news soon.

I'll be pausing the project until the bandwidth solution is finished. I'm hoping to start uploading again by this weekend.

And another

2005-02-08 is a little old and a lot new.

By the way, it's the day after my birthday.

February 07, 2005

Migraine

When I have a massive migraine, playing the dijeridoo helps a lot. 2005-02-07 is the result of that.

It's my birthday, by the way.

February 06, 2005

Sunday

2005-02-06 is a simple song for a Sunday. Recorded in Domkyrkan, thanks to Rayverb.

Saturday

Here's 2005-02-05. It's Saturday. You figure it out.

The Trouble with Torrents

I know that the torrents aren't working as they should. I've uploaded a new set that are point at a different tracker. We'll see how that does.

Deep in the Brazilian Jungle

2005-02-04 is a little different. It's just on the border of being ambient. Maybe it should be called Drum 'n' Bossa (Bossa 'n' Bass?)

Anyway, it's Friday and time to dance!

This is a collaboration between me and David Azarch, the DJ from the Mudd Club. Actually, it came from an idea from Lauren Amazeen, the former Executive Director of The Kitchen, who's also my wife.

February 03, 2005

Overload!

I haven't even announced this thing yet and I'm starting to get lots of hits. I've switched over to using BitTorrent to deliver the files so I don't get hit with huge bandwidth fees.

Again with the bell thing?!?

Here's 2005-02-03. A twisted version of what you heard if you entered this site from the main page.

Remix/Remodel

Today's piece is surprisingly called 2005-02-02.

This is an extremely reconfigured version of "voice - Rouen" from the album "Space Exploration.

February 01, 2005

Memories of Manhattan

Here's the latest, it's called 2005-02-01.

Bits and pieces were recorded in New York over several years. Finally assembled and tweaked many years later in Stockholm.

Second time around

Here's the latest, it's called 2005-01-31.

Using dijeridoo and voice to trigger the resonances in Gasverket in Stockholm. This recording was made possible by the amazing Rayverb plugin.

Here we go!

Here is the first of the daily ambient tracks. It's called 2005-01-30.

This is a generative piece created from some of the source material used in Web Phases.
